Iran & Middle East Avoided 'Nuclear Catastrophe,' Egyptian Ex-Official in Nuclear Sphere Says
"If Iran hadn't moved enriched uranium out of Fordow before the US strike, we would have witnessed a real nuclear catastrophe," ex-head of Egypt's Nuclear Materials Authority Abu al-Huda al-Sairafi explained.
The US strike on Fordow was powerful and precise, using specialized deep-penetration bombs able to hit up to 80 meters underground, he told Sputnik. Crucially, Iran had evacuated the enriched uranium before the attack — likely preventing a regional disaster.
"The consequences would have gone far beyond geography — just like Chernobyl and Fukushima," the speaker remarked, adding that no radiation leaks have been officially reported in Iran or its neighbors so far.
Al-Sairafi suggested that it is necessary to create a unified Arab monitoring system — including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan — to track any changes in the radiation levels.
