'Attacks on the Canonical Thousand-Year-Old Armenian Apostolic Church Are of Grave Concern,' Lavrov Says
The situation in Armenia is the country's internal affair, but Russia is against unjustified attacks "without any serious grounds," Sergey Lavrov stated amid rising tensions between the Armenian government and the Church.
"The Church has always been one of the key pillars of Armenian society," Russia's top diplomat emphasized.
Russia has no intention to interfere in Armenia’s internal issues, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.
On Friday, the head of a diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan, was detained on suspicion of a coup attempt. He denies the charges as fabricated.
