Most nations of the Global South are currnetly "in danger of losing grip of their identity and cultural expression," Ethiopia's state minister of culture and sports said, urging to reclaim both of them.
The Global South must reclaim its cultural identity amid globalization's tide, Ethiopian State Minister of Culture and Sports Nebiyou Baye told Sputnik Africa.
"A lot of generations in a lot of countries of the Global South have tried and fought to keep their cultural identity," the official noted on the sidelines of the Festival of the Greater South in Addis Ababa.
Globalization and dominant media from the Global North are currently eroding local cultures, he warned, speaking on the sidelines of the Festival of the Greater South in Addis Ababa.
"The Global South is in a position that should be advised to reclaim what has been there for generations," Nebiyou stressed.
What Should the Global South Do to 'Keep Its Cultures Alive'?
The answer lies in decolonizing "minds and imagination," which remain "tailored and guided by the Global North's thoughts," according to the Ethiopian official.
"We, Africans and the Global South, […] are not anymore in colony. But the minds, minds of the youth are in a neocolonial state," the state minister explained.
He also stressed the importance of empowering authentic artistic expression, as showcased at the Festival of the Greater South in Addis Ababa.
"If we keep on bringing our authentic voices to our authentic artistic expressions, then we can say that we have reclaimed our place, and we have kept our cultures alive," Nebiyou noted.
