Armenia's Yerevan Court Arrests Archbishop Ajapakhyan for Two Months, Lawyer Says
Head of a diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan, was detained on Friday on suspicion of coup attempt. He denies the charges as fabricated.
A Yerevan court in Armenia arrested Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan for two months, his lawyer Ara Zohrabyan said.
"The court granted the investigation's motion and arrested Mikael Ajapakhyan for two months. The decision is illegal and ungrounded. The defense intends to appeal the decision," the lawyer pointed out.
On Friday, an Armenian opposition faction proposed Ajapakhyan — detained over alleged calls to overthrow the government — as a PM candidate to trigger impeachment proceedings against current PM Nikol Pashinyan. The archbishop later asked not to be considered, saying he is “fully satisfied” with his church service.
