African Union Welcomes Peace Treaty Between Rwanda, DR CongoOn Friday, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and his DRC counterpart, Therese Wagner, signed a peace deal in Washington to resolve the conflict in the eastern DRC.In the peace agreement, DRC and Rwanda express their full support for the negotiation process between the Congolese authorities and the M23 rebel group that acts under the auspices of Qatar. The two countries commit to respecting the agreement reached in 2024, which includes the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from DRC territory within 90 days and the establishment of a joint security coordination mechanism within 30 days. Both countries also agree to launch a joint economic integration mechanism.After the failure of Angola's mediation efforts, the M23 rebel movement resumed its offensive in the DRC, seizing large parts of the country's east. The DRC government accused Rwanda of supporting the rebels and urged it to withdraw troops from the country. Rwanda denied the accusations. In late January, the M23 captured Goma, the capital of the eastern DRC province of North Kivu. In mid-February, the rebels entered Bukavu, the capital of the South Kivu province.
