SA President Fires Deputy Minister Over Unauthorized Trip to US Sparking Backlash in Coalition Gov'tDeputy Trade Minister Andrew Whitfield (photo 2) of the Democratic Alliance (DA)—the second-biggest party in South Africa's coalition government—was fired as his unauthorized trip to the US violated rules for members of the executive, Cyril Ramaphosa stated."All international travel by members of the executive must always be undertaken with the express permission of the president," he emphasized in a statement.DA leader John Steenhuisen slammed the dismissal as a perceived "calculated assault" and "the greatest political mistake in modern South African history." Ramaphosa called this reaction "intemperate" and said he asked Steenhuisen to propose a replacement. "It is unprecedented in the history of our democracy that the exercise by the president of his constitutional prerogative and responsibility with respect to a clear violation of rules and established practices governing the conduct of members of the executive has met with such irresponsible and unjustifiable threats and ultimatums from a member of the executive," the president added. The DA leader is scheduled to hold a press conference on Saturday, where he will allegedly announce the party's next moves.
