Zimbabwe’s Cotton Research Institute Promotes Genetically Modified Cotton to Combat Climate Change

Zimbabwe is intensifying cotton revival efforts through the Presidential Input Scheme and genetically modified (GM) cotton research.

The Cotton Research Institute (CRI), in partnership with local farmers, is testing promising hybrid seeds specifically designed for semi-arid conditions, state media reported.

The trials, conducted directly with farmers in Gokwe District, a major cotton-producing region in Zimbabwe, aim to develop climate-resilient cotton varieties, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Zimbabwean cotton production.

GM cotton has the potential to boost yields, reduce pesticide use, and improve drought tolerance—transforming production and improving livelihoods for farmers, said CRI Director Washington Mubvereki.
