Zimbabwe Projected to Have 812,000-Tonne Grain Surplus This Year
The projection is based on an anticipated 3.01 million-tonne cereal reserve, including a 2.93 million-tonne harvest, exceeding the 2.2 million-tonne annual grain requirement, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere said.
He noted that the surplus could be even higher if calculated using SADC or national average consumption rates.
The government will support farmers through timely payments via the Grain Marketing Board (GMB), Muswere added. Marketing will occur through multiple channels, including the GMB, Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange, and direct sales to processors.
Over 600 cotton buying centers have been established to boost financial inclusion, Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka announced.
The Agricultural Marketing Authority will set up more points to consolidate seven contractors and curb side marketing. Regulating the sector through designated buying points aims to ensure fair trade with 500,000 farmers and prevent illegal off-market sales.
