Will the Ivorian President Seek the Fourth Term in a Row? — Big Decision to Be Announced Soon
"In the coming days, after meticulous reflection, and with a clear conscience, I will make a decision," said Alassane Ouattara, addressing the closing of the ruling RHDP party’s second congress before a crowd of over 100,000.
The 83-year-old president, who has served three five-year terms since 2010, pledged to ensure peace and security during the upcoming vote, set for October 25. In 2020, almost 50 people were reportedly killed in clashes during the election campaign.
During the congress, Ouattara was officially named RHDP’s presidential candidate. "Ouattara pulled us out of a desperate situation, out of dangerous decadence, and led us toward remarkable progress," president of the RHDP congress Patrick Achi stated.
ℹ The current Ivorian constitution, adopted in 2016, allows presidents to serve unlimited five-year terms — previously, a two-term limit applied.
