Russia is making efforts to assist the Iranian people, Putin said
Russia's position on the escalation of the situation around Iran and Israel is well known and is reflected in the statement of the Foreign Ministry, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.
"Our position on the current events is well known. It is clearly stated, articulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of Russia. And you know about the position we have taken in the Security Council of the United Nations," Putin said at a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow.
The unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis or justification, the president said, adding that Russia is making efforts to assist the Iranian people.
Araghchi's visit to Russia will allow discussing ways how to get out of the current situation in the Middle East, Putin said.
In turn, the Iranian foreign minister stated that Tehran is grateful to Moscow for condemning actions by the United States and Israel against Iran,.
"We would also like to thank Russia for strongly condemning these actions. Russia today is on the right side of history and international law. [Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] and [Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian] asked me to convey their best wishes to you. I hope that today we will be able to discuss the full range of issues related to these events," Araghchi said, adding that attacks on Iran by the US and Israel are contributing to escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
Tehran believes actions of the US and Israel against Iran to be illegitimate and reiterates that the country has the right to defense itself, the foreign minister added.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia deeply regrets the new round of escalation in the Middle East following US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Regarding the damage done to the facilities, Peskov said that an assessment would be needed to determine if there were any radiation risks.
The official pointed out that the number of parties to the conflict had increased.
