Together, South Africa and Russia can create a sustainable future for the next generations, Deputy President Paul Mashatile stated at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday. Pretoria is ready to promote international cooperation, the official added.
Russia has always stood by Africans in their times of struggle — and Africa remembers it, Keith Khoza, acting spokesman to South Africa's deputy president, told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"Russia has always been there at the time of need for most of African countries to see how they can assist, support and be with them in terms of the struggles that they went through," noted Khoza, explaining why many African delegations attended the SPIEF.
The strong Russia-South Africa bond is rooted in history — during apartheid, Russia provided training, arms, and other support to the anti-apartheid struggle, the official pointed out.
Can BRICS Free Africa From Eurocentric Trade Systems?
"BRICS […] is going to be quite instrumental in ensuring that the voice of Africans is heard, […] that trade is facilitated between big economies and African economies," the speaker said.
While the current trade system doesn't favor Africa, BRICS has the potential to become an alternative — for this it needs to deepen its engagement with the continent, according to him.
"BRICS is a solution to a long-standing problem that Africans set to endure by being locked outside and development happens everywhere in the world except in Africa," the official stated.
'UN Isn't as Democratic & Representative as We Want It to Be,'
"UN has always been the centerpiece in trying to find world peace, but UN has its own limitations," Khoza pointed out.
There is a growing need to reform global institutions like the UN, as well as the ICC or ICJ — as some countries are not even signatories to their statutes, he noted.
"The developing countries have been saying that there has to be a reform of all multilateral institutions, including the UN, to make sure that there's a fair representation between the North and the South, the developed and underdeveloped," the speaker explained.
'It Would Be Good Idea for Sputnik Africa to Have Presence in South Africa'
Sputnik's presence in Africa is crucial for truly understanding African narratives from within, the official said, welcoming Sputnik's plans to open an office in South Africa.
"You may try and understand issues from a distance, but when you get closer and more intimate with the situation, you get a different understanding of the dynamics, issues, and the perceptions of people in that particular area," he pointed out.
In February, Sputnik Africa launched an editorial center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, becoming the first Russian media outlet broadcasting in the Amharic language.
