According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a column of smoke reached a height of 500 meters and stretched towards the city of Miyakonojo, located to the southeast.
Locals have been posting videos and photos of the smoke on social media, as well as ash that has settled on cars, grass and city streets.
Shinmoedake's volcanic activity has increased since March of this year, characterized by an increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes, etc. In late May, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a level 2 warning for volcanic eruptions, recommending caution when approaching the crater.
There are currently no plans to raise the level.
