Israel Must Drop Baseless 'Excuses' for Bombing Iran & Pursue Peace, South Africa's Deputy President Says
Pretoria has consistently advocated for peaceful conflict resolution — including in the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Iranian tensions — because force only fuels escalation, Paul Mashatile told Sputnik Africa.
"It should not be easy for one country to go and attack another country. It doesn't matter what your reasoning is," the deputy president noted.
What must Israel do if it suspects Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons? It should send inspectors — not bombs, according to the official.
Is New, Universally Respected Court Essential for Global Justice?
Mashatile recalled that while the ICJ must act on behalf of ordinary people suffering in crises like Gaza, Israel has ignored its ruling in the case brought by Pretoria.
Thus, the world needs an alternative: "an institution that is respected by all," the official stated to Sputnik Africa.
"Because otherwise it won't make sense that we go to the court, complain, and nothing happens," he emphasized.
'Welcome to South Africa': Mashatile Praises Sputnik's Expansion to Africa
"We will be able to learn more from [you] about what's happening in this part of the world," Paul Mashatile said in an exclusive interview. "You will also be able to show them part of what's happening in South Africa and the African continent, and that way we'll grow together as people."
The deputy president said he was "happy" about Sputnik's plans to open an office in South Africa.
In February, Sputnik Africa launched an editorial center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, becoming the first Russian media outlet broadcasting in the Amharic language.
