14:46 21.06.2025 (Updated: 15:16 21.06.2025) Armenian Diaspora Representative in US Calls Pashinyan Dictator Over Karapetyan's Case
"It's none of the prime minister's business, and he has no right to interfere in church matters because the Armenian constitution says that there's a separation of church and state," editor-in-chief of The California Courier newspaper Harut Sassounian told Sputnik.
He said Pashinyan is trying to use the church for his own political purposes and would like to replace Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II with a more obedient clergyman.
"The church has its own 1,700 year old procedures on how to deal with any kind of issues regarding the clergy status," Sassounian said.
He said Pashinyan is thus breaking the law.
"The prime minister once again violated the law because he is very intolerant even though he calls himself democratic but he is not a democrat, he is a dictator he cannot tolerate anyone disagreeing with him," Sassounian said.
