ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) - The Russian city of St. Petersburg is hosting the 28th edition of SPIEF from June 18-21 under the theme of "Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World." Rossiya Segodnya international media group, Sputnik's parent company, is the forum's information partner.
South Africa and Russia can create a sustainable future for new generations, South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile said on Friday.
"Through strengthening multipolarity, we are able to harness the collective power of our nations to construct a future that is more sustainable for future generations. South Africa is prepared to do its share in promoting international cooperation and collaboration for the future of all nations," Mashatile said at a plenary session of the 2025 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
South Africa, Russia can create sustainable future for generations, South Africa ready to promote int'l cooperation, he added.
States in the Global South should be grateful to Russian President Vladimir Putin for creating the conditions for their development, Mashatile said.
South Africa and Russia can create a sustainable future for new generations, said Mashatile. It is necessary to carry out reforms of the institutions within the Bretton Woods system so that they reflect the real state of affairs on the global stage.
"We must accelerate the reforms, first of all within the WTO, this concerns reforms within the IMF, as well as other institutions of the Bretton Woods system, so that they can reflect the real state of affairs on the global stage," he said, speaking at the plenary session of the SPIEF.
As Mashatile noted, it is precisely by strengthening the multipolar approach that the collective capabilities of countries can be used for the benefit of creating a more sustainable future for the next generations.
The importance of the global South in the world economy cannot be disputed; Africa is becoming a new center of growth, he added.
The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is a recognized platform for global dialogue on numerous economic issues, Mashatile said.
"This forum... remains one of the foremost platforms for global dialogue on economic cooperation, investments, innovation and inclusive growth. It is therefore an honor to be given the opportunity to address this distinguished assembly at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum," Mashatile said at the SPIEF plenary session.
