Russian President Vladimir Putin further called South Africa's import of Russian vodka a "very correct step," suggesting it could pave the way for grain and meat exports.
"[The Vice President] from South Africa said that vodka supplies to the Republic of South Africa have already been established. You know, this is a very correct and serious step. Why? Because, as we say, if you drink vodka, you need something to eat with it. And therefore, this will surely be followed by supplies of meat products or grain," Putin said.
After Putin joked about importing Russian vodka to South Africa, the moderator of the plenary session said:
"More vodka will help the world and bring it to a better state"
Putin responded to this: "In any case, it will be more fun to live, that's for sure."
Prior to that, Deputy President of South Africa Paul Mashatile said that South Africa and Russia should increase trade and have recently agreed to import Russian vodka to Africa.
"We also looked at the agriculture. We are exporting citrus, fruits to Russia. We are exporting wines, but we need to increase the volumes. We have what we call South Africa-Russia Business Council, we are also making deals on what to import from Russia. One of businesspeople told me yesterday that he has just signed a deal to import Russian vodka to South Africa and obviously to the African continent," Mashatile said at the plenary session of the 2025 SPIEF (St. Petersburg International Economic Forum).
