‘I Love the Russian Spirit and Soul:’ Sierra Leone’s Mines Minister on Russia’s Lasting Impact

“Russia has played... a major role in the development of our country. I sit down here as a beneficiary of the Russian education. My six years here from 1986 to 1992 as a student is one of the best six years in my life,” Minister Julius Mattai told Sputnik Africa.

Sierra Leone continues to send students to Russia to study medicine, mining, journalism, and more.

From literature to language, from culture to cooperation — Mattai praised the lasting impact of Russian-Sierra Leonean ties, and highlighted Sputnik as a key media bridge for African audiences.

“If we partner, coordinate, collaborate, and cooperate with the Russian Federation, there’s a lot we can gain as a country,” he said on the sidelines of #SPIEF2025.
