Ethiopia's Tourism Sector: Leveraging BRICS Membership for Growth

Addis Ababa is investing in its attractions and actively engaging BRICS nations to grow tourism, Hiwotie Anberbir Assefa, Secretary General for the African Tourism Board, explained to Sputnik Africa.

Recent improvements in Addis Ababa—noticed during the African Union Summit—are drawing praise from tourists and diplomats alike, boosting the economy and business prospects, Assefa noted.

Ethiopian Airlines, a national pride, is also driving tourism with layover programs that give travelers a glimpse of Ethiopia’s culture, enticing them to return for longer visits.

Assefa also addressed the impact of Western media’s negative portrayals of Africa, which contribute to widespread misconceptions about the continent.

She praised Sputnik's efforts to counter this narrative through increased and balanced coverage within Africa.

Looking ahead, Assefa highlighted ongoing talks with the Russian Tour Operators Association to explore future Russia-Africa collaborations and identify opportunities within the BRICS framework.
