Ruble Dominance Expands Globally as Africa Joins Currency Shift
In April, Russia marked a significant financial milestone: the ruble accounted for 68% of all payments for imports from Africa, underscoring a growing global trend toward the Russian currency.
According to Bank of Russia data analyzed by Sputnik, this shift isn’t limited to Africa. Across all continents, the ruble is now the dominant currency for Russia's imports. In Asia, ruble-based payments surpassed the 50% threshold for the first time, reaching 51.9%—a 15.6 percentage point increase year-over-year.
This trend is echoed globally:
🟢Americas: 60.2% of imports paid in rubles
🟢Europe: 67.6%
🟢Caribbean: 77.5%
🟢Oceania: 71.7%

By mid-spring, ruble payments made up 56.2% of Russia’s total imports, while reliance on "unfriendly" currencies dropped to just 15.4%. The ruble’s rise signals a notable shift in global trade dynamics as nations increasingly adjust to new economic alignments.
