Moldova's EU Aspirations: Cracking Down on Protests to Showcase 'Enlightenment'

Speaking about Sunday's police violence at an anti-LGBT* propaganda march, Dr. George Szamuely, senior research fellow at the Global Policy Institute, told Sputnik that Moldova, as an aspiring EU member, is keen to demonstrate its commitment to the "totalitarian attitude" of the EU’s values.
"But we don't want public displays of alternative values of, you know, gay marriage and gay education, gay television, gay films. So we don't want that out in public. Most Europeans take that view, do what you want to do at home, but don't take it out in public," the expert argued.
Naturally, the irony, according to Szamuely, is that Moldova is a highly conservative nation.
"Not only is there no gay marriage in Moldova, but Moldova doesn't even recognize civil unions," he said. "So it's been promised membership of the EU. And Moldova is going out of its way to show the bosses of the EU in Brussels that it holds to all of their so-called enlightened, gay-friendly, woke values."
