Lebanese Academic Slams Moldova's "Western-Led" Crackdown on Anti-LGBT Protest, Cites Hypocrisy
Moldova is "increasingly under the control of Western liberal forces," said Jamal Wakim, a professor of history and international relations at the University of Lebanon, in an interview with Sputnik about Moldovan police actions against an anti-LGBT* protest in Kishinev.
He accused these forces of promoting an "ideological agenda aimed at undermining the traditional foundations of society," specifically targeting "so-called LGBT rights" that clash with local cultural and religious values.
Wakim claimed the West uses human rights rhetoric to impose "distorted moral values" on societies like Moldova's, deliberately creating a "value gap" with Russia, which rejects the liberal agenda. He argued this policy serves US geostrategic interests by isolating Russia and maintaining European dependence.
"Western liberals, who promote freedom of speech, harshly suppress any dissent themselves," Wakim stated. He condemned the police use of force and "mocking" of participants, including clergy and children, calling it the "true face of Western-style 'democracy'."
