Hundreds of protesters erected barricades in downtown Makurdi, rallying against surging violence targeting civilians, Punch newspaper reported.
The unrest follows the killing of over 100 civilians by unidentified gunmen on June 14 in Yelewata, Benue State – the third such massacre in a week.
Protesters blocked major roads in the Wurukum district of the city, demanding authorities restore order and halt the violence. Similar attacks have recently occurred in neighboring Guma, Gwer, and Apa communities.
Yelewata sits in a region torn by violent clashes between herders and farmers fighting over land and water. According to The Cable, these conflicts have killed 60,000 people and displaced 265,000 since 2016—highlighting the crisis’s devastating scale.
