Leadership of M23 Rebel Group Open to Peaceful Resolution to Conflict in Eastern DRC, UN Official Says
Head of the UN mission in the DRC Bintou Keita held a meeting with representatives of the AFC rebel coalition, which includes the M23 group, in the North Kivu province's capital, Goma.
The meeting aimed to discuss priorities of the peacekeeping mission's mandate, especially the protection of civilians.
While Goma is currently under the rebels' control, a total of 1,359 members of the Congolese armed forces were recently transferred from the city to Kinshasa with the facilitation of the AFC/M23, Keita recalled at a press briefing.
The conflict between the government forces and the M23 rebels in the eastern DRC escalated in January, when the rebels captured Goma and eventually seized other strategic areas.
