First Group of South African Troops Arrives Home, Defense Ministry Says
The 249 South African soldiers, who were part of the SADC mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), were welcomed by Defense Minister Angie Motshekga.
"Seeing our soldiers in good spirits and genuinely excited to be home not only speaks volumes about their unwavering patriotism, but also powerfully reflects their steadfast commitment to defending the territorial integrity of the Republic and supporting its people," Motshekga told the troops upon their arrival.
In March, SADC announced the end of SAMIDRC, and in April, South Africa began a phased withdrawal of its troops.
Escalated clashes between DRC forces and M-23 rebels that erupted in late 2024 led to the deaths of 17 South African soldiers.
