Cote d'Ivoire Workers Reportedly Slam Unilever Over Severance Pay Breach

Unilever plans to sell its Cote d'Ivoire unit to a local consortium, sparking worker backlash over the collective bargaining agreement violation, a British media outlet reported.

The agreement guarantees severance pay of "one month of average gross salary per year" if layoffs occur due to the sale. However, Unilever claims the pay isn't relevant as employment will continue under the new owner.

What's behind the backlash against Unilever in Cote d'Ivoire?

Conflict: Unilever Cote d'Ivoire's head claimed workers' rights and salaries will be decided by the buyer, bypassing the agreement.

Worker Concerns: "No assurances have been given regarding job security," an employee told the media outlet.

Double Standards: In Europe, Unilever recently guaranteed ice cream workers' terms for three years post-spin-off, despite no legal obligation.

"Not applying the same conditions in Ivory Coast is unequal treatment and negative discrimination," stated the lawyer representing local staff.
