UN Overwhelmingly Votes for Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza Strip
The UN General Assembly passed a resolution demanding:
▪immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza;
▪release of all hostages held by Hamas;
▪full, safe and unimpeded delivery of aid to Gaza;
▪immediate lifting of Israel's blockade on Gaza.
"All parties must uphold international humanitarian and human rights law, with particular attention to civilian protection and accountability for violations," the resolution read.
Voting results:
▪149 countries in favor;
▪12 against: including the US, Hungary, Fiji, Argentina;
▪19 abstained.
The US opposed the move, with acting UN envoy Dorothy Shea claiming the resolution “rewards Hamas” and calling it a waste of time.
