Ruto Calls for Justice & Police Accountability Over Kenyan Blogger's Death in Custody Amid Mass Protests
Kenya's President William Ruto has strongly condemned the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody, and urged a swift, transparent, and credible investigation.
"This tragic occurrence, at the hands of the police, is heartbreaking and unacceptable," the president noted in a statement.
Ojwang was detained on Saturday over an alleged offensive post on X. Police told his family on Sunday he died by hitting his head in the cell, but the autopsy reportedly confirmed a violent death.
"It must be borne in mind by every member of the National Police Service that whenever they take a person into custody, they assume a tremendous responsibility for that individual's safety, security, and well-being, and must make every effort to discharge this duty conscientiously and without fail," Ruto emphasized.
Mass protests have erupted in the Kenyan capital Nairobi following the incident, with demonstrators reportedly calling for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.
