Tragedy in South Africa's Eastern Cape: at Least 49 Lives Lost in Devastating Floods
"Over the past two days, relentless rains, strong winds, and landslides have tragically claimed lives and caused widespread devastation," the Eastern Cape Province's Premier Oscar Mabuyane said.
All of the casualties occurred in the OR Tambo district of the province, the official noted.
The floods caused significant damage throughout the province:
hundreds of residents displaced;
widespread damage to infrastructure, roads, and health facilities;
power outages affecting close to 300,000 people (over 136,000 restored now);
What the government is doing:
providing shelter, food, water, and psychosocial support;
search and rescue operations are ongoing;
disaster teams and volunteers are deployed.
The flooding reportedly happened as a result of a powerful cold front that recently hit the Eastern Cape.
