70 Southern White Rhinos Relocated From South Africa to Rwanda to Protect Endangered Species

The translocation to Akagera National Park, carried out by African Parks in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board and supported by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, was done in two phases—35 rhinos each—as part of the Rhino Rewild Initiative.

The goal is to strengthen Akagera’s rhino population and position Rwanda as a key player in regional and global rhino conservation.

The move reflects Rwanda’s growing role in conservation, linking species protection to sustainable tourism and the long-term value of protected areas like Akagera, Rwanda Development Board CEO Jean-Guy Afrika said.

The relocation is just the beginning of a larger conservation effort, African Parks CEO Peter Fearnhead said. He emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring to ensure the rhinos adapt well to their new environment.

The Rhino Rewild Initiative aims to rewild over 2,000 southern white rhinos to secure viable populations in safe, managed areas across Africa.
