South African Business Confidence Rises Slightly in May After April Slump
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Business Confidence Index rose to 115.8 from 114.9 in April, following a significant drop the month before.
The uptick was attributed to:
A stronger rand (gaining over 3% against the dollar).
Record highs on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
High gold and platinum prices.
The chamber noted the passing of the budget after political disagreements as a positive step. It urged policymakers to now focus on growing the economy, boosting investor confidence, and creating jobs, emphasizing the need to address factors that deter foreign investors.
