African Kids 'Always Unite Groups': First Deputy Director of International Children's Center Artek

“I think children from Africa are very bright, they are open-hearted and kind,” Elena Zhivoglyad told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the Third Education Ministers' Forum. “They always unite children groups, the friend groups, and they are always ready to participate in activities.”

The iconic Russian camp based in Crimea wants more African children to experience its programs.

“We are eager to show them our nation, our culture… and to let them dive as deep as possible into what Russia gives.”

Talks are underway with the Central African Republic to send its children to Artek, aiming to set an example for other countries on the continent.

ℹ Founded in 1925 in Crimea, Artek became a beloved Soviet pioneer camp, hosting thousands of children each year. In 1958, it became an international camp.

Becoming part of Ukraine after the dissolution of the USSR, Artek faced the threat of closure in 2009 due to funding issues, despite UNESCO support.

Following Crimea's incorporation into Russia in 2014, Artek was revitalized under federal control and has since welcomed 346,000 children, including 10,000 from abroad.
