South Africa Views BRICS as Key Platform to Advance Global South Interests in Astronomy Area
South Africa is open to international collaboration, including with Russia, and supports South-South partnerships to correct historical imbalances in astronomy development, Takalani Nemaungani told Sputnik Africa.
According to the chief director of astronomy at South Africa's Department of Science and Innovation, who is also a member of the BRICS Astronomy Working Group, key priorities include:
- Sustained investment in astronomy;
- Protection of observation sites;
- Skills development in astronomy, data science, and engineering;
- Building a strong, unified African astronomy community through collaboration and shared knowledge.
