How Starlink is Challenging African Astronomy

Low Earth-orbit satellites, such as Starlink, are increasingly causing problems for both optical and radio telescopes, Takalani Nemaungani told Sputnik Africa.

The chief director of astronomy at South Africa's Department of Science and Innovation acknowledged the benefits of satellite internet, especially for rural connectivity. However, he stressed the urgent need for "harmonious coexistence" to protect major telescope investments that also deliver socioeconomic benefits.

Nemaungani, who is also a member of the BRICS Astronomy Working Group, expressed concern over Starlink's potential expansion into South Africa, noting illegal connections are already appearing near borders.

He outlined a vision for Africa to develop its own satellite systems to reduce data costs, promote technological growth, and establish the continent as a hub for world-class astronomy.
