Africa Faces Surge in Mpox & Cholera: CDC Calls for Urgent Action
The continent is on track to surpass 2024's entire mpox case count by mid-year. Over 64,000 mpox cases have already been reported through May—compared to 77,000 in all of 2024, according to Africa CDC.
Hotspots:
Sierra Leone now accounts for 53% of new weekly cases.
91% of its infections are concentrated in 3 tourist-heavy districts.
Unlike Congo's 2024 outbreak (mostly in children), 70% of Sierra Leone’s cases are in men; children account for just <3%.
Cholera is surging too: Africa accounts for 94% of global cholera deaths, driven by poor sanitation, climate shocks, and underfunded healthcare systems.
Solutions Exist: Africa needs $150 million to finish 3 regional cholera vaccine plants and secure government demand.
But the public health response is faltering. Surveillance gaps, especially in Sierra Leone, and vaccine rollout delays risk worsening both crises.
“The situation is not yet under control… we should be worried,” said Ngashi Ngongo, a principal adviser at Africa CDC.
