Africa Won't Be Left Behind in Digital Revolution, Managing Director of SA Tech Company Says

Russia's Global Digital Forum, held in Nizhny Novgorod on June 5–6, offers "an open mindset" to the participants, who can harness the flood of global information to support local digital growth, the managing director of a South African tech company said.
African countries want to participate in creating the digital future, not just benefit from it as they did during previous revolutions, Zolani Gwiliza, managing director of the South African tech company Cattle-Watch Africa, noted on the sidelines of Russia's Global Digital Forum.
"We don't want to be like all the other revolutions that have happened before where the first revolution, the industrialization and everything, we were always the last to come on board. We want to be among the first people now to jump in and come on board because we serve a market that really needs to have access to everything in a very, very speedy manner," he told Sputnik Africa.
Why African Media Must Lead the Narrative Fight?
If African media do not educate the public themselves, the people will rely on information that they receive from outside, Gwiliza explained.
"If you don't place your narrative up front, forward, then someone will take any other narrative that is being projected," the speaker continued.
According to him, to protect Africa's information space from Western narratives, local media must:
be "in the forefront in sharing information."
Africa Trusts Sputnik Because It Understands Local Culture
"Sputnik has positioned itself in a manner that they will have someone who understands… Nigerian culture, similar to Kenya and beyond," the speaker said.
Embedding cultural understanding into media's approach "is the first way to have a proper narrative" into any country, he pointed out.
How Russia Can Empower African Media's Digital Shift?
"The best mechanism and method for Russia to play a significant role within the African media space" is to share information and assistance, Gwiliza noted.
Russia's Global Digital Forum is exactly the right platform for sharing knowledge and expertise to drive the transformation of African media, he added.
