Nigeria Must Fence Borders to Curb Terrorism & Transborder Crimes, Chief of Defense Staff Says
Border management is critical for Nigeria's "survival and sovereignty" at a time, when the Sahel "is heating up," General Christopher Musa said.
"If the Sahel falls, it is Nigeria that they [terrorist groups] are interested in. […] That is why we need to secure fully and take control of our borders," he stated at the Voice of Nigeria security summit in Abuja.
The general pointed to Pakistan's 1,350 km border fence with Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia's 1,400 km barrier with Iraq as successful examples of enhancing security through border fencing.
Nigeria shares borders with Cameroon (1,975 km), Niger (1,600 km), Benin (809 km), and Chad (85 km) — all of which are grappling with security threats fueled by terrorist groups.
