Africa's Blue Economy Could Generate Up to $1 Trillion Annually, Mo Ibrahim Foundation Says
The continent's blue economy currently generates around $300 billion annually, the Dakar-based foundation that aims to address Africa's challenges through data-driven analysis and dialogue said in its latest report.
"The continent has over 30,000 km of untapped coastline for the fishing industry, equivalent to around 98% of Africa's total coastline (30,500 km)," the report read.
Notably, African countries import over $6 billion worth of fishery products each year, most of which was sourced from outside the continent, it added.
"We have to rely on our own resources. […] We are a very rich continent, but we are a very poor people. Why? Because we are mismanaging our countries, our resources, our people," Sudanese-British businessman Mo Ibrahim was quoted as saying at the Ibrahim Governance Weekend Forum, held on June 1-3 in Marrakech.
