Rethinking Corruption in Ghana: Time to Drop Western Templates?

The nation's battle against corruption should be shaped by its own societal realities, rather than foreign ideals, Ghana's Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, said, speaking at the West Africa Regional Anti-Corruption Policy Dialogue in Accra.

He highlighted the failure of broad, foreign-designed approaches, pointing instead to sector-specific solutions tailored to local challenges in education and healthcare.

From fake teacher appointments and ghost schools to unnecessary surgeries and the misuse of medical supplies, Agyebeng detailed deeply embedded fraud costing both money and lives.

Calling for strict enforcement, clear legal definitions, and culturally relevant policies, Agyebeng urged stakeholders to create a bottom-up, practical framework rooted in Ghanaian values—one that truly serves the people, not abstract academic models.
