South African Astronomers Urge Regulators to Protect Research From Starlink Satellite Interference
Scientists warn that low-orbit satellites like Starlink risk disrupting sensitive signals from South Africa’s SKA-Mid and its Australian partner telescope.
South African scientists are pushing for licensing rules to limit interference in key frequency bands, Federico Di Vruno, co-chair of the IAU Centre for Dark and Quiet Sky Protection, said.
This may require companies like SpaceX to redirect satellite beams or pause transmissions during critical observations.
The SKA Observatory also seeks similar protections from other satellite operators like Amazon and OneWeb amid rising global satellite launches.
