South African Court Initiates Inquiry into Apartheid Era Activists' Deaths
In 1985, anti-apartheid activists Fort Calata, Matthew Goniwe, Sicelo Mhlauli, and Sparrow Mkonto—collectively known as the Cradock Four—were killed by a police hit squad.
Despite the Truth and Reconciliation Commission denying amnesty to six suspects, no prosecutions followed.
Families accuse post-apartheid authorities of obstructing justice. Advocate Howard Varney, representing the families, reportedly called the killings a "calculated" act by the apartheid regime and said this may be the families’ final chance for truth and closure.
President Ramaphosa earlier stated that all affected families, as well as all South Africans, "deserve closure and justice." He noted that a commission of inquiry with broad and comprehensive terms of reference offers a chance to uncover the truth and guide any further necessary actions.
