'Children are Best Diplomats': Russian Center Marks Children's Day in South Africa
The first Russian children’s center in South Africa introduces kids to both cultures through shared traditions, local engagement, and history, helping them feel part of a multicultural world, Nina Zelenskaya, director of the center, told Sputnik Africa.
"When South African children come to visit us and participate in master classes, games, and joint projects with [Russian] children, they naturally become friends, and through them, the ties between adults are strengthened. Thus, step by step, we build bridges of friendship between Russia and South Africa," she said.
Zelenskaya noted strong cultural parallels in child-rearing values:
🟠Emphasis on family , respect for elders , and community (akin to the Zulu concept of ubuntu ),
🟠Teaching children their role in a larger collective where everyone cares for one another,
🟠Passing down life lessons through storytelling, songs, and dance,
🟠A shared deep respect for education and parental sacrifice for children’s futures.
To celebrate International Children's Day, the center, supported by the Russian Consulate in Cape Town, is hosting an event at the historic Castle of Good Hope. Activities include a guided tour, an art workshop, and a traditional tea party, all designed to combine history, culture, and creativity in support of children’s development.
"I wish [children] to remain curious and open to the world. Not to be afraid to be themselves and respect others in their differences. I would wish them to grow up in a world where adults hear their voices and take their opinions into account. And of course, I wish every child, no matter where they live – in Russia, South Africa or any other country – to have the opportunity to learn, play, dream and make their dreams come true," Zelenskaya added.
