In Nigeria’s Ogun State, Nigeria, Dr. Kayode Adewale, named Best Teacher and appointed the state’s Education Ambassador, is changing how students experience math. His breakthrough came when he realized his students weren’t struggling with the subject itself, but with the language, it was taught in: English. The moment he switched to Yoruba, understanding lit up the classroom. Now, his multilingual approach is inspiring a wider conversation on how African students learn best.

Today, he brings in Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin through student-led content, making math less intimidating and more empowering.
“Ever since then, I’ve observed that this improved the students’ learning outcome in mathematics, and the higher education potential of the students keeps increasing as a result of using the mother tongue,” he said.
