On International Education Day 2025, Uganda's President Museveni unveiled bold AI reforms to transform Uganda’s education, linking Africa’s past scientific delays to colonization and urging urgent adoption of AI for skills, agriculture, security, and other critical sectors.
Africa stands at a transformative crossroads where artificial intelligence (AI) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) can together unlock unprecedented opportunities for skill development and economic growth. With over 60 percent of its population under 25 years old, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the continent faces an urgent need to equip its youth with practical, future-ready skills that AI-driven TVET programs uniquely provide.
Integrating AI into TVET will personalize learning, bridge infrastructure gaps, and propel innovation—turning Africa’s demographic dividend into a powerhouse of technological progress and sustainable development.
Dr. Vusi Maseko, Critical Reader, TVET Module Development and AI-Powered TVET Digitalization Ambassador at the University of South Africa, tells African Currents how integrating artificial intelligence into TVET can empower Africa’s youth and fuel sustainable innovation in key sectors of the economy.
"We must push Ubuntu-inspired AI because it's rooted in fairness, dignity and collective good [...]. It's time for us to prioritize local curriculum development and knowledge transfer. We must start from home and move outward. We must not just go out and just assimilate whatever is given to us [...]. We must try to support and co-create AI tools. We must stop importing black box solutions. From wherever, whether it be from the West or from within ourselves," Dr. Maseko expressed.
