AFRICOM Chief Urges African States to ‘Burden-Share’ in Security as US Scales Back Aid
"Some things that we used to do, we may not do anymore," AFRICOM Commander Michael Langley told reporters on the sidelines of the African Chiefs of Defense Conference (ACHOD) in Nairobi.
He emphasized that African nations must foster greater self-sufficiency in security.
The message comes amid fears that terrorist groups — especially in Somalia — reportedly see US funding cuts as a chance to expand.
The US is reviewing the future of AFRICOM, the US commander stated earlier this week, urging African nations to voice their stance on its possible removal directly to Washington.
The ACHOD, held for the second time, demonstrates Africa's increasing role in shaping its own security agenda, Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized in his keynote address.
