No Redemption: SA Court Sentences Mother Who Trafficked Her Daughter to Life Imprisonment

In a harrowing case that has gripped South Africa, the Western Cape High Court sentenced Kelly Smith and two accomplices for kidnapping and trafficking then six-year-old Joshlin Smith.

The girl vanished in 2024 and has not been found. During the trial, a witness said Kelly Smith admitted selling her daughter to a traditional healer for 20,000 rand ($1,100), wanted for her "eyes and skin."

"There is nothing that I can find that is redeeming or deserving of a lesser sentence," Judge Nathan Charles Erasmus stated, declaring the verdict.

The judge also condemned Kelly Smith's manipulation during the trial and lack of remorse. A sentence of imprisonment "is the only option here," he added, despite the convicts' claims of drug influence.
