Ukraine's Military Desertion Cases Rise — Expected to Nearly Double to 61,000 by End of 2025
Sputnik's analysis of Ukrainian court records revealed that a total of 35,750 Ukrainian servicemen deserted in 2024, compared to 12,563 in 2023.
The crisis of military evasion in Ukrainian forces is rapidly expanding — a total of 25,508 cases were recorded in the first five months of 2025:
January: 4,992 evasion cases;
February: 5,123;
March: 5,318;
April: 6,245;
May: 4,830.
The sharp rise in military evasion shows Kiev's growing struggle to keep troops and maintain combat readiness amid forced conscription.
