Russia Backs More Voice for Global South — But Slams Push to Boost Western Seats in UNSC

Western states are already overrepresented in the UN Security Council (UNSC), and Moscow considers granting them more seats "an obvious relic of the colonial era," Russian Deputy UN Envoy Dmitry Polyansky said.
"We cannot support the expansion of the Council to 25-29 members," the diplomat noted during an informal debate on the issue.
Polyansky also expressed concern that increasing the organization to more than 20 members will diminish its effectiveness.
Currently, the UNSC consists of five permanent members and ten non-permanent ones. In April, the BRICS states confirmed their support for initiatives to reform the UNSC.
