On Wednesday, German Chancellor Merz announced that Berlin would help Ukraine develop its own long-range weapons. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reacted, saying such remarks hinder the attempts to reach the peace process path in Ukraine.
German support for Kiev, including intelligence and training related to advanced weapons, such as Taurus cruise missiles, and their eventual delivery could escalate the Ukrainian conflict, Julius Pembere, a Zimbabwean political analyst and sovereign debt expert, told Sputnik Africa.
"There is a political risk for Germany" if it supplies Ukraine with Taurus missiles, the analyst pointed out.
"This can also exacerbate or escalate the conflict, risking a broader confrontation with Russia," the expert emphasized.
Domestic pressure is rising from movements that are not aligned with pro-Ukraine support and that are critical of Berlin's deepening involvement in the conflict, he noted.
"They might also face political backlash for their deeper involvement in this foreign conflict. As I am informed, they have begun some cracks, political pressure [on Germany] from other movements which are not aligned with this pro-Ukraine support," Pembere said.
