South Africa Will Not Arrest Anyone for Singing Controversial Anti-Apartheid Song, Ramaphosa Says

"'Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer' is a liberation chant and slogan. And it's not meant to be a message that elicits or calls upon anyone to go and be killed," the president told reporters.

What's the real story behind the song?

⦁ emerged in the 1980s as a protest anthem during the anti-apartheid struggle;

⦁ widely used at rallies by black-majority political parties;

⦁ in 2022, SA's High Court ruled it is not hate speech — a decision upheld in 2024.

At a recent White House meeting, Trump played the song performed by Julius Malema — a controversial South African politician — and claimed it is a 'call for genocide." Trump asked why Malema hadn't been arrested.

Here is what Ramaphosa thinks about it:

"When it comes to the issues of arresting anyone for any slogan, that is a sovereign issue. It's not a matter where we need to be instructed by anyone that go and arrest this one."
