Kenya Backs Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara — Opens First Embassy in Rabat
"Kenya considers the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach to the resolution of the Sahara issue," read a joint statement issued following a meeting between Morocco's FM Nasser Bourita, and Kenya's Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Both countries pledged deeper cooperation in agriculture, energy, tourism, fisheries, security, and trade — with Kenya aiming to boost exports of tea, coffee, and fresh produce to Morocco.
The opening of Kenya's embassy in Morocco marked 60 years of diplomatic relations. This "milestone" shows a renewed commitment to "rebalancing trade" for a more equitable economic exchange, Mudavadi noted.
Western Sahara is a disputed territory claimed by Morocco and Algeria. Morocco offers autonomy under its rule, while Algeria advocates for the region's self-determination.
